Are you concerned about tooth enamel erosion?

Can you feel dents, tiny chips, or cracks in your teeth? Worried that your teeth are yellowing or becoming increasingly sensitive? This could be caused by tooth enamel erosion. While it’s an irreversible condition, our experienced team can prevent it from advancing, by providing a dental plan tailored just for you.

Tooth enamel erosion explained

Tooth enamel is the hard, outer surface of teeth and also the strongest surface in the body. Yet it can be worn away over time, exposing the softer, more vulnerable dentine beneath. And unfortunately, it doesn’t grow back.

Several factors may cause damage to teeth enamel, including:

  • Consuming sugary drinks
  • Eating high-sugar foods
  • Brushing too hard and too often
  • Bruxism
  • Certain medications such as aspirin
  • Acid reflux disease
  • Dry mouth
  • Genetics

Signs of tooth enamel erosion

The major indicators of enamel erosion include:

  • Indentations on teeth
  • Yellowish teeth
  • Tiny chips and cracks appearing in teeth
  • Tooth sensitivity

How to prevent tooth enamel erosion

There are several steps you can take to help look after your tooth enamel. These include:

  • Minimising or avoiding acidic food and drinks, particularly fizzy drinks
  • After consuming acidic food or drinks, wait at least an hour before brushing your teeth (this allows your saliva to neutralise the acid effects)
  • Chew sugar-free gum between meals to boost saliva production
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and don’t brush too hard
  • Use a specialist fluoride toothpaste
